🫀 Glasgow Alcoholic Hepatitis Score (GAHS)

Estimate prognosis in alcoholic hepatitis with the Glasgow Alcoholic Hepatitis Score (GAHS).

Glasgow Alcoholic Hepatitis Score (GAHS)

Age
WBC (×10⁹/L)
Urea (mmol/L)
INR
Bilirubin (µmol/L)

When to use

Identify patients likely to benefit from corticosteroids.

How it works

Points for age, WBC, urea, INR and bilirubin (total 5–12). GAHS ≥ 9 indicates poor prognosis.

Key points

  • In severe disease (Maddrey DF ≥ 32), GAHS ≥ 9 predicts steroid benefit.
  • Combines clinical and laboratory variables.
  • Reassess steroid response with the Lille score.
