Always drowsy by day, dozing off while sitting? ESS assesses daytime sleepiness
The ESS rates your tendency to doze in 8 everyday situations, total 0-24; above 10 usually suggests excessive daytime sleepiness. It is often a clue to problems like sleep apnea — if you're sleepy by day with snoring, night-time gasping, morning headaches or hypertension, take it seriously. Free; scored locally. A screen, not a diagnosis.

Common questions
What ESS score warrants a doctor?
Generally above 10 suggests excessive daytime sleepiness and warrants assessment. With snoring, night-time gasping or hypertension, see a sleep or respiratory clinic to rule out sleep apnea.
Is daytime drowsiness always a disease?
Not necessarily — insufficient sleep and a disrupted routine also cause it. But persistent, uncontrollable daytime sleepiness needs a cause; a high ESS is a prompt.
How does it differ from the insomnia index (ISI)?
ISI rates the severity of poor sleep / insomnia, ESS rates daytime sleepiness — different focuses, usable together.
