When to use
Interpret a lipid panel against the patient's risk level, not a single fixed cut-off.
How it works
LDL targets: very high < 1.4, high < 1.8, moderate < 2.6, low < 3.4 mmol/L. Non-HDL target ≈ LDL target + 0.8 mmol/L.
Key points
- LDL target follows ASCVD risk stratification, which differs slightly by guideline.
- Severe hypertriglyceridaemia (≥ 5.6 mmol/L) prioritises pancreatitis prevention.
- Lp(a) is an independent hereditary risk — measure at least once.
- ApoB reflects atherogenic particle number for residual-risk assessment.
